Quasar Medical has acquired Medres International's Nitinol Design and Development Center in San Diego, expanding its engineering and manufacturing capabilities for minimally invasive medical devices.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
The deal includes the 10,000-square-foot San Diego facility, which opened in 2024 and specializes in the design, development and manufacturing of nitinol-based medical device components. Nitinol, a nickel-titanium alloy known for its flexibility and shape-memory properties, is widely used in minimally invasive medical devices such as catheters, stents and implants.
Medres International will continue operating the rest of its business independently while Quasar assumes control of the nitinol operation and its customer base.
Quasar, a contract development and manufacturing organization, said the acquisition strengthens its global technology operations and expands its ability to support customers from early-stage product development through commercial manufacturing.
The San Diego site will serve as Quasar's Nitinol Design and Development Center, focusing on engineering, prototyping, process development and manufacturing. Products developed at the facility can transition to high-volume production at the company's manufacturing plant in Tecate, Mexico.
Quasar chief executive officer Alex Wallstein said the acquisition is part of the company's long-term growth strategy and significantly expands its expertise in nitinol technologies used in advanced minimally invasive medical devices.
The company said integrating the San Diego engineering team with its development centers in Israel and Galway, Ireland, will provide customers with broader technical resources and a streamlined path from product design to manufacturing.
Quasar said the acquisition adds capabilities like laser cutting, shape setting and electropolishing of nitinol components, while complementing its existing work in catheters, medical balloons, steerable systems and microsensors.
Christine Trepanier, Quasar's senior vice president of technology, said the expanded technology organization will allow the company to work with customers earlier in the product development process and accelerate commercialization of new devices.
Medres CEO and chairman Chris Cheng said selling the San Diego operation allows the company to focus on expanding its headquarters in Hungary while providing the nitinol business with greater resources under Quasar's ownership.
Quasar Medical operates 11 facilities worldwide and employs about 5,000 people. The company provides contract design, development and manufacturing services for medical device companies and produces components for minimally invasive technologies.
