Airgain expands public safety connectivity line with FirstNet-compatible devices
The Carmel Valley-based company aims to improve communications for first responders, utility crews and other critical infrastructure operators working in remote and challenging environments.
Carmel Valley-based Airgain Inc. has expanded its portfolio of mission-critical wireless communication products through its work with FirstNet, a nationwide public safety broadband network operated by AT&T.
The company announced the addition of two new devices -- MegaFi 2 and MegaGo 2 -- to its AirgainConnect product line. Both devices are designed to support first responders, utility crews and other field personnel who operate in remote or difficult-to-reach areas.
The routers use High Power User Equipment, or HPUE, technology and operate on FirstNet's Band 14 spectrum, a portion of wireless spectrum reserved by the federal government for public safety communications. According to Airgain, the technology can transmit at up to six times the power of standard devices, helping users maintain connectivity in rural areas and inside structures where signals are often weakened by concrete, glass or metal.
The new products join Airgain's existing AirgainConnect Fleet and Go-Kit Pro offerings, expanding the company's connectivity solutions for vehicle-based, fixed-site, portable and rapid-response operations.
Company officials said the devices have earned FirstNet Trusted certification, indicating they meet cybersecurity and network performance standards established for public safety applications.
"Reliable connectivity is critical for today's first responder community," Airgain president and CEO Jacob Suen said in a statement.
He said the expanded product line is intended to provide public safety agencies, utilities and other critical infrastructure operators with additional communications options for field operations.
Matt Walsh, assistant vice president of FirstNet and NextGen 9-1-1 products at AT&T, said dependable communications are essential for emergency responders, and extending connectivity in challenging coverage areas remains a priority.
Airgain said its products are designed to simplify deployment and installation while providing integrated 5G connectivity, support for multiple carriers and ruggedized equipment for demanding environments.
